Ex-BlackBerry Director joins backup startup Dropmysite
For immediate release, Singapore, June 24th 2013 – Sales and marketing veteran from BlackBerry, John Leung, has joined Dropmysite as their new VP of Sales for Asia. His addition will see more partnership deals being inked throughout the continent.
Having spent the last 18 years in MNCs in the UK and around Asia, Leung achieved plenty – like introducing the “Never Say Die” internal motto of M&C Saatchi, running the inaugural MTV Asia Awards and making BlackBerry the no. 1 selling smartphone in Philippines. Along with his impressive resume and wide network of contacts, Leung proved to be the man to bring email, website and database backups to more markets regionally.

By attracting yet another experienced executive, Dropmysite underscores the potential for this startup to grow into a major business. Leung is among other experienced personnel on board the startup dream like Yutaka Shinohara in Japan (ex-Verisign/Trend Micro) and Charif El Answari in EMEA (ex-Google).
“DMS ticks all the right boxes. Growing company with a great product in a growing space that is scalable globally. And most importantly a pretty cool team putting it all together,” says Leung.
Leung will hit the ground running and be focusing immediately on all the major Telco’s and ISP vendors in the region. Specifically, he will be targeting the corporate teams responsible for their respective SME business.
Leaving a MNC as big as BlackBerry for a startup is often the path less travelled. Yet Leung feels that this path will make all the difference.
“Not often in life you get the chance to be part of a well backed start-up that has a compelling product. So the risk to leave the corporate world was mitigated by the opportunity to make a significant contribution by helping build a successful company and the rewards that come with that legacy,” says Leung.
Possessing an entrepreneurial spirit, Leung is the director and co-founder with his wife at Renee L. Collections, an award-winning bespoke designer and couture tailor of ladies’ evening and bridal gowns. Now firmly in the startup world, Leung is bullish about the startup scene and Dropmysite prospects.
“I believe the startup scene is now very vibrant after a sluggish period of acceptance since 2007/8. It’s definitely approaching a serious tipping point of interest and ability to fund raise in Asia,” says Leung. “Some milestone acquisition and investment deals have been done recently like SgCarMart, PropertyGuru and Reebonz to name just 3. It won’t be long before we see a local start up hit a billion-dollar valuation. We want DMS to get there first.”
Besides talking shop, Leung will be keen to chat about football and automobiles over a cold beer or single malt whisky. An ardent fan of Manchester United, having grown up in Manchester, he was a Red Devil even before Sir Alex Ferguson. As a motorhead, Leung once rebuilt a 1970 MG Midget and rode a Ducati Monster in London.
Outside of work, he has a passion for contact sports. A retired rugby player, Leung coaches juniors from less privileged schools. He has also promoted Boxing, staged international professional fights and co-founded White-Collar fight events in 2007. Though he is no Don King, these events provided a platform to give back to society by donating to several charities.
